About Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue

Rescue TruckThe City of Fort Lauderdale has a rich history of continuous ocean lifesaving services, dating back to 1926. Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue is USLA certified and nationally recognized for excellence.

Recent Competitions

May 9, 2009: Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue's Competition Team of 11 lifeguards traveled to Key West to compete in the 12th Annual Key West Classic 12-Mile Paddleboard & Surf Craft Race.
Results: Andy Engle won the Men's Surf Ski division in a course-record 1-hour 36 minutes. Sherry & Shelley Griffith also won and set a course record in the Women's Doubles Surfboat (Ocean Dory) division in 1:59. Mitch McCrady also won and set a course record in the Men's Singles Surfboat in 2:06. Amanda Wilson set a new record of 2:26 in the Open Women's Paddleboard division. Also competing were: Erik Schwarz, Victoria Windmiller & Ben Hankinson in the Surf Ski, & Molly Militello in the Paddleboard.

May 20, 2009: FLOR entered a team in the Delray Beach Ocean Rescue Lifeguard Challenge.
Results: Nick Macko and Katherine Noland won the Open 400-Meter Surf Swim. Chris Hoch & alumni FLOR lifeguard John McEntee won the Open Doubles Surfboat. Christine McCrady took 4th in the Open Women's 800-Meter Paddleboard Race. Nick Macko won the grueling showcase event, the International Ironman (run, swim, paddleboard & surf ski), and took 2nd in the Paddleboard Rescue Race.

May 27, 2009: FLOR entered a team in the Pompano Beach Ocean Rescue Lifeguard Challenge. 
Results: The FLOR EMS Competition Team, consisting of EMT John O'Donnell, Paramedic Tom Frezza, and EMT Ryan Carattini, took 2nd place in the Basic Life Support Challenge by getting the highest score in the medical scenario, but just missing out on 1st Place by getting edged out in the swim.

Contributions to Ocean Lifesaving

  • Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue continues to serve in a national leadership role, contributing to the profession of ocean lifesaving.
  • 2000 to present- Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue Captain elected Vice-President of the Florida Ocean Rescue Chief’s Association.
  • 2005 Florida Beach Safety Educational Workshop & Conference – Keynote speaker for this state-wide symposium facilitated by the Florida Beach Patrol Chiefs Association & the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
  • 2004-2005 USLA Lifeguard Training Academy Instructors in Destin, Florida - Successfully trained over 60 students for Destin State Fire District Chief Tuffy Dixon. The lifeguard training academy was completed March 13th, 2004, and was commissioned so that Destin could field its first professional lifeguard service.
  • 2000 Fort Lauderdale Beach Lifeguard, Christine McCrady named “Lifeguard of the Year”.
  • 1999-2004- F.B.P.C.A. Ocean-Mile Swim Series Paddleboard Series Champions: Christine McCrady, Kelley Helt, Joe D’Agostino.
