Introduction

Section 17-7.7 of the City of Fort Lauderdale Code of Ordinances restricts the operation of landscaping or yard maintenance power tools or motorized equipment Monday through Friday before 7 a.m. or after 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday before 8 a.m. or after 6 p.m. There are no restrictions on noise emitted by this type of equipment in the ordinance..

In early 2021, the City Commission discussed potentially placing restrictions on the use of leaf blowers in the City of Fort Lauderdale. Key concerns discussed regarding the use of leaf blowers were debris being blown into the streets and our waterways (which impacts drainage and water quality), noise, and hours of operation. Prior to adopting any changes to the City code, the City Commission requested that a Leaf Blower Working Group be convened to discuss these concerns. Commissioner McKinzie would act as the Commission liaison to the group.

Starting the Conversation

The working group activities will take place in three distinct phases:

  1. Community Survey
  2. Working Group Meetings
  3. Reporting to the Commission

Community Survey (Closed March 10, 2021)

While staff reviews local municipal ordinances and available technical information about leaf blowers, the City attempted to gain a better understanding of stakeholder perspectives and concerns. The City created specific surveys to reach the following stakeholder groups: Fort Lauderdale residents, landscape service professionals, and business owners/their employees.

The surveys closed on Wednesday, March 10, 2021. We appreciate everyone who took the time to provide input.

Leaf Blower Working Group Meetings (March-April)

A small working group will be convened to discuss the survey results and key issues. When scheduled, meeting links will be posted to the public calendar.

Reporting to the City Commission (May)

The input received will be reported to the City Commission in May/June 2021. At that time, the Commission will determine next steps.
