As a proud recipient of a Made to Move grant from Degree® and Blue Zones, LLC, the City of Fort Lauderdale is excited to break ground on a project that supports active mobility between the Flagler Greenway and MASS District businesses.
From a raised intersection and two new crosswalks on Flagler Drive at NE 2nd Avenue and NE 4th Avenue to creative placemaking with wayfinding and painted intersections, the project introduces active transportation methods to promote health and well-being by enhancing the existing infrastructure to create a more comfortable and inviting experience for people of all ages and abilities. Project elements also include new bicycle infrastructure installed earlier in 2020.
When completed, the project significantly enhances mobility connections for bicyclists and pedestrians to create the environment needed to support active uses of the Flagler Greenway. Beyond the physical improvements, the grant also helped to facilitate community engagement, while encouraging neighbors to use active forms of transportation in and around the area.
A Painted Intersections Call to Artists awarded to local artist Daniel Marosi involved a Creative Placemaking Committee comprised of local businesses, stakeholders, and grant representatives. Committee members noted that Marosi’s design best embodies the intent of the Unilever Degree deodorant and Blue Zones, LLC, Made to Move® grant program and Flagler Village.
The Made to Move grant program from Degree® and Blue Zones, LLC, is a competitive funding opportunity created to assist communities in advancing active transportation so that citizens live fuller, healthier, longer lives. With the goal of promoting walkable, bikeable, transit-friendly environments for all ages, incomes and abilities, Fort Lauderdale was one of five communities awarded this funding.
