with a Holiday Twist
City Hosts First Tour de Lights Bike Ride December 5th
Who: The City of Fort Lauderdale and Tarpon River Civic Association
When: Saturday, December 5, 2015, 4:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. (Note: Should the City have to cancel the event due to inclement weather, it will be rescheduled to December 19, 2015 at the same time and same location. Cancellation of the event will not be communicated before 3:30 p.m.)
Where: Florence C. Hardy Park, 25 S.W. 9th Street, Fort Lauderdale
What: Tour de Lights Family Fun Ride & Moonlight Movie in the Park (#FTLFunRide)
Event highlights
- Bicyclists in holiday attire riding decorated bikes
- Leisurely 4.5 mile bike ride from Florence C. Hardy Park through Tarpon River neighborhood led by Fort Lauderdale police officers (Bike lights are required for the ride, and helmets are required for riders 16 & under, but are encouraged for everyone regardless of age.)
- Display of decorated homes along bike route
- Family-friendly movie “Elf” in the park with free popcorn
- Bike rodeo, helmet fittings, and bike registration
- Free bicycle, helmet, and Broward B-cycle membership raffle
- Used, unwanted bicycle collection (Recyclable Bicycle Exchange volunteers fix up the donated bikes and give them to local children in need.)
Why: The Family Fun Ride & Moonlight Movie in the Park event heightens awareness for bicycle safety for riders of all ages and abilities and assists the City with reaching its goal of zero fatalities for pedestrians and bicyclists, as outlined in the City’s newly adopted Vision Zero Fort Lauderdale initiative. The Fun Ride also promotes bicycling as a sustainable transportation alternative, gets people out of their cars to see Fort Lauderdale’s neighborhoods through the lens of a slow-paced bike ride, and encourages healthy, outdoor activity and social interaction.
