The Human Resources Department partners with City departments to hire, train, promote and retain a qualified and diverse professional workforce for the delivery of excellent services. The Department is committed to a fair and inclusive recruitment process; provides learning and development opportunities; and administers competitive employment benefits for City staff. Human Resources represents the City in collective bargaining discussions, union grievance hearings and promotes conflict resolution. The Department also protects the City's physical and financial assets against loss by maintaining effective insurance programs and minimizing the City's exposure to risk. 

Talent Management

Talent Management fosters professional and rewarding careers as we strive to recruit top talent, develop employees, promote subordinates, and retain staff.

Recruiting activities include publishing job openings and matching candidates with the right skills to available jobs in the City, participating in career fairs and promoting professional and personal development of City employees.

Talent Management provides professional and personal development opportunities. The development of City employees results in higher workplace productivity, innovative approaches, and creativity.

Talent Management comprise of the following divisions:

Classification & Compensation provides a wide range of services including:

  • Updating and maintaining the City’s Salary Plan and job descriptions
  • Conducting job audits
  • Conduct employment verifications
  • Implementing Salary changes as per bargaining agreements
  • Processing performance/merit reviews
  • Processing changes in employees’ records such as address changes and salary/position changes

The Organizational Development & Training division is responsible for designing, creating, and implementing training and organizational development efforts to further the mission of the City of Fort Lauderdale.

Learning

In addition to offering traditional training opportunities, we continually look for ways to bring learning to our workforce in unique and creative modes. As part of our commitment to on-going employee development, we have a variety of resources to enable our employees to improve their skills, knowledge, and abilities based on their unique needs. In support of such initiatives, the City of Fort Lauderdale has partnered with a variety of higher education institutions to offer employees continuing education opportunities to sharpen their professional skills and accelerate their career.

On-Boarding

Through our On-Boarding process, we ensure that employees are engaged early and often and get the support they need to quickly learn the operation of the City. Our On-Boarding does not end at New Employee Orientation - we continually seek opportunities to help new employees feel welcomed, engaged, and part of the City of Fort Lauderdale.

Employee Relations Division

The Employee Relations Division oversees and manages employee relations issues, union contract and policy compliance, conflict resolution, and internal investigations.  The work of Employee Relations creates a direct link between the employees, managers, and executives. It is with immense pride that this division stands ready to meet the needs of the City of Fort Lauderdale and its neighbors.

Risk Management Division

The Risk Management Division manages programs in the areas of employee safety, loss prevention, property, casualty, and employee benefits and wellness.

Risk Management attempts to protect the City’s physical and financial assets against loss by maintaining effective insurance programs, minimizing the City’s exposure to risk, providing for appropriate reserve levels, funding incurred liabilities, and providing for the proper cost allocation of incurred losses among City departments.

Risk Management also provides internal investigation services for the City on claims arising out of automobile, general, police, professional, and employment practices liability exposures. In addition, Risk Management monitors the workers’ compensation and employee health benefit programs being handled by third party administrators.
