Complete Streets is a concept created by Smart Growth America in order to integrate people and place into the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of our transportation networks. Complete Streets principles recognize that transportation networks must balance the unique needs of different modes, local land uses, economies, cultures, and natural environments. Ultimately, Complete Streets provide numerous benefits to safety, public health, sustainability, and community building for people of all ages and abilities. 

The City adopted its own Complete Streets Manual based on the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization's Broward Complete Streets Guidelines. By establishing design guidelines to create streets for all users regardless of travel mode, the City is providing the framework for a transformation of public infrastructure that will help to address a host of critical issues that face the City today, including increasing traffic, incomplete network of sidewalks and bike lanes, roadway safety concerns, and decreased level of public health conditions.

It is anticipated that the City's Complete Streets Manual will provide guidance to ongoing projects, as well as form the base upon which future strategies will be developed to make Fort Lauderdale a connected, livable community.
