In 2017 a unified effort was launched to evaluate the transportation, landscaping, planning and urban design needs of the Las Olas Boulevard corridor from Andrews Avenue to SR A1A.  The effort included extensive stakeholder participation by the Las Olas Working Group established that included residents, business owners and property owners along the entire corridor. Two district commissioners, Vice Mayor Steve Glassman and Commissioner Ben Sorensen led this effort. The efforts of the Working Group included hearing presentations from the various stakeholders on their concerns and providing comments on the issues and reviews of the vision through a process that aimed to build consensus on the future of a world-class corridor over a 2.5-year timeframe from September 2018 to June 2021.  In June 2021, the Fort Lauderdale City Commission voted to endorse the Las Olas Conceptual Design Visions for the Eastern and Western Corridors below.

The City of Fort Lauderdale is working with our neighbors to enhance safety and mobility for all who access Las Olas Boulevard between S. Andrews Avenue and A1A to live, work, or play.

Las Olas Boulevard from Andrews Avenue to SE 17th Avenue - Western Corridor

The City of Fort Lauderdale brought a consultant team to develop the engineering design plan for the western corridor of Las Olas Boulevard from Andrews Avenue to SE 17th Avenue.

The consultant team will collect data, such as surveys, subsurface utilities, and other pertinent information for engineering design. Then, the consultant will develop a constructive preliminary design by incorporating the collected data with the existing Las Olas Vision Plan.

The preliminary design will be presented to the community for input through workshops and is anticipated to be brought forward to the City Commission in early 2025. For additional information on this effort, or to provide feedback, please contact the Transportation and Mobility Department at transportation@fortlauderdale.gov.

Western Corridor Recent Project Activities: September - October 2024

Starting September 20th through October 4th, the consulting team has collected information on the underground utilities along Las Olas Boulevard. The surveying started at SE 17th Avenue and continued westward down the corridor. This work was completed in about four weeks.

What information are we collecting, and why is it important?

The team's survey crew will be collecting underground utility information in the coming weeks. Accurate information on the location of underground utilities will provide the basis for the engineering design above ground. This due diligence before proceeding with engineering design will reduce potential utility conflicts during construction.

How are we collecting the information?

The team is ensuring that all the information being used as the basis of the engineering design is accurate. The data is currently being collected along the travel lanes using truck-mounted ground-penetrating radar (GPR). The vehicle will move along travel lanes like regular traffic. Additional data is being collected along the sidewalk and outdoor seating areas using a hand-held GPR.

When will the survey crew work?

During this initial phase of data collection, the crew worked on Las Olas Boulevard from SE 17th Avenue westward towards Andrews Avenue during non-peak pedestrian and vehicle traffic times. Data collections within travel lanes will occur between the hours of 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM, and any data collection along the sidewalk or outdoor seating areas will occur between 2:30 AM - 7:00 AM.

Will this impact the activities on Las Olas Boulevard?

Our priority is to minimize possible disruptions to people using the sidewalks or traveling along Las Olas Boulevard. The crew will work during non-peak hours to mitigate impacts. Also, the crew will mark utilities with chalk to the extent possible with the rains.
