Welcome to the Urban Design and Planning Division of the City of Fort Lauderdale!

Our mission is to shape urban development outcomes through creative thinking, sound civic planning and urban design solutions that result in a high-quality of life for our residents, a good experience for visitors, and an exceptional sense of place for all.

We encourage community engagement and forging strong relationships with our neighbors, community leaders, developers, partner agencies, and design professionals in furthering urban design excellence and the future of our built environment. The Urban Design and Planning Division’s goals focus on enhancing quality of life and improving livability in the City of Fort Lauderdale. We encourage and direct orderly growth and promote well-designed development and redevelopment through sound planning principles.

The Division provides services including:

• Community development
• Urban revitalization
• Long-range planning
• Historic preservation

As part of the development review process, the Division also coordinates the presentation of certain applications to incorporate public input before the Planning & Zoning Board and the Historic Preservation Board, as well as the City Commission. The Division’s efforts strive to implement the goals, objectives, and policies of the City’s Unified Land Development Regulations and existing Comprehensive Plan, as well as various planning initiatives intended to improve the overall welfare of Fort Lauderdale and its neighborhoods.
